Artists in the Family
I've had some busy weekends. Yesterday I went to a writer's conference in Richmond, Indiana. But the Saturday before that I went to my brother Joel's in Illinois. His mother-in-law had passed away and they had a memorial for her by opening her house to everyone for the afternoon. It was just what she would have wanted--a house full of loving people.
Photos and collages of her family were set up throughout, and my nieces and her other grandchildren had letters to her and other memorabilia. I really wanted to show you the drawing pictured here.
My niece Emily drew this. It's a collection of things her grandma was known for: a hat; one of her favorite sayings: Live Love, Laugh; her coffee cup, glasses, and necklaces; and her crossword puzzles--but this puzzle is very special . . . more about it later.

Here are two of my fives nieces in my brother's family: Brooklyn and Emily. They've grown into beautiful young ladies! Brook wrote a lovely letter to her grandma Char, and Emmy is the artist of the pencil drawing. I was lucky to catch them together with my camera. I didn't have the same luck with the other girls, though, and it just didn't seem the right day to interrupt and gather them for a photo. I'll just have to go back for that! :)

Here's a close-up of the crossword puzzle Emmy drew. It's entitled "Parting Words" and the crosswords are all the grandkids and children. Then, under the magnifying glass are the names of the grandparents: Anthony, who died before Emmy was born, and Charlene, most recently. And then the little message, "We Miss You."

I just thought this was so creative and special--I had to share it with you!
WRITING UPDATE: The conference I went to yesterday was very interesting and informative. I met with an editor who gave me some good pointers on my proposal. Now I can hardly wait for Tuesday, my writing day this week! People are so positive and responsive when they hear about this work. There's a tremendous need to understand the season of grief and God's presence and work during it. I'm getting anxious to get it out there.
Thanks for checking in on me. Have a blessed week!
